December vacation in Malaysia - 10 things to experience
10 things we learned about Malaysia on a 3 day trip
1. Kuala Lumpur: We stayed with friends in KL. KL is an international city with a strong Muslim influence. It's a bustling city with tons of constructions, tourist buses (mostly for Chinese tourists), and malls. There are so many malls in KL that we think they out number any other building!
2. Enduro Riding: if you love to ride motorcycles, as we do, go see Jun at Roc X Enduro Malaysia. (you can tell her we sent you!). We had a blast and it is an activity that you will never forget. Riding in the jungle is pretty awesome and made for a great birthday present!
3. Penang Street Art in KL: in KL there is an alley that it is inspired by Penang. Penang is a city in north Malaysia that is famous for its street art among other things. This is the KL tribute to it. You can ask a local how to get here.
4. Batu Caves: A trip in KL is not complete without a trip to the Hindu Temples in the Batu Caves. Just 10 min from the city it is a site to take in. Lots of positivity around and so many colors. The stairs are exposed to sun so it is better to go in the morning to take advantage of some shade. It is always very hot and humid in KL. Bring water and enjoy the monkeys!
5. Spoons are the new knives: In Malaysia you will not find knives in restaurants. The silverware offered are forks and spoons. It takes some times to learn how to cut meat with a spoon, but that is their way. Food is delicious though and a bit eccentric too.
6. Strange gas spray: There are a few "strange" rules and customs in Malaysia and the first one we experienced was actually on the plane ride there. Just before landing, the flight attendant came by the entire cabin and sprayed a visible gas all over everyone. It made us a bit uncomfortable and we never got an explanation why, but apparently every plane/passenger needs to be gassed before landing.
7. Scooters drive in the emergency lane: apparently, the preferred lane for riding in KL is the emergency lane. Scooters and motorcycles take possession of the emergency lane on highways. Everyone does this!
8. The Helipad: Perhaps the coolest bar in KL. The Helipad is just that, a helipad. Rumor is that the pad is used by day for its intended purpose, and in the late afternoon it turns into a bar. The weather was so-so therefore we didn't get the sunset we were hoping for, but it was spectacular nevertheless.
9. Durian: this is possibly the worst smelling fruit on earth and people in South East Asia go crazy for it. It is so smelly that it is forbidden in hotels and even in the subway. It sort of smells like rotten cheese. We got brave enough to try it in a popsicle form. We ended up giving it to a monkey! Nasty!
10. Call to Prayer: Malaysia has a big Islamic influence and everyday you get to hear the call to prayer. They sound a few times a day and after a little while it becomes a background melody. While religion in general is not our cup of tea, it was nice to hear the melody a few times a day.
