December vacation in Singapore - 10 things to experience
10 things we learned about Singapore on a 1 day trip
1. Super clean city: Singapore it is a very clean city, it is almost impossible to find trash on the ground while walking. even the subway is spotless. Singapore has invested a lot in making the city a very livable place and it reflects on how clean everything is. Good job Singapore!
2. Gardens by the Bay: one of the most beautiful experience you can have in Singapore is to visit the Gardens by the Bay. It is a complex of waterfront man made gardens divided in 3 main areas, Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. It is not possible to truthfully enjoy the gardens in 1 days but you can get a good sample of the magic. We visited 2 domes.
Flower Dome: the Flower Dome is the largest glass greenhouse in the world. You can admire exotic plants from 5 continents all of them under one roof and controlled with a Mediterranean style climate. It is pretty unique to see all those plants/flowers together.
Cloud Forest: In the Cloud Forest you take a trip from the bottom to the top and back down admiring all the different plants and flowers. There is a 30 meter waterfall (the biggest indoor waterfall in the world) and every hour on the hour you can to experience the mist. You feel like being in a tropical forest.
3. Marina Bay Sands Hotel: This is the icon hotel in Singapore. Many called it the boat hotel for the resemblance. We didn't stay at this hotel but we went up to the roof top to enjoy the view and a beer. The hotel is very close to the Gardens by the Bay.
4. The Jewel: inside the Singapore Airport you'll find The Jewel. This is a botanical garden with a "reverse" fountain (the biggest indoor fountain in the world). On the outskirt of the garden there is a mall, with anything one can image. The Jewel at the Changi airport is possibly the best layover experience in the world.
5. Orchard Road: if you are in Singapore and you love shopping you must visit Orchard Road. Every luxury brand is present here and there are as many malls as people (at least it feels like that). We stayed on Orchard road because our hotel was there. We enjoyed the Christmas street decoration but we could have care less for shopping!! You can easily reach Orchard Road from the airport via subway (our choice) or by using Grab (sort of a Uber for Asia).
6. Dim Sum: OMG! We came about this local Dim Sum place called Dim Tai Fung. The best Dim Sum one can eat, in our opinion. They make them fresh right on the spot and you can order a la carte. We still drooling about them...
7. Can only crossed streets on over or under pass: If you want to walk in Singapore, it is basically impossible to cross a street. Between cars and people, the area is very chaotic, so Singapore built lots of over or under pass to get you on the other side of the street. The problem is that when you go in one of those pass, a mall presents itself in front of you and navigate the passage ways can get very complicate. Even with a very good sense of directions you can often resurface on a street you didn't mean to.
8. International melting pot: Singapore is definitely the Babilonia of places. It being a important stop-over to many destination in Asia, it is filled with people from all over the world. Even people that called themself Singaporian, are rarely born there. In Singapore, you feel a citizen of the World.
9. Pod hotel: This was our first experience in a Pod Hotel. Due to having a lot of people and no more room to build, in Singapore you can find Pod Hotel. For us it was ideal to sleep for a few hours on our layover but it can get very claustrophobic if you spend more than that in it. We choose the Yotel Air in Orchard Road and in the Jewel and both times we felt like being on a space ship capsule (The Orchard road Yotel Air has slightly bigger rooms).
10. Nice people. Last but not least, we found out that people in Singapore are very nice. Anyone is ready to give you and hand (that being for directions or a suggestion for a place to eat). Even though there are lots of people, just like in any Asian city, everyone seemed very welcoming. We really enjoyed our time there and we suggest to anyone to go check out Singapore.
