From Portland to Portland: Our Epic Journey Across the US and Beyond as Digital Nomad Travelers

When my wife Rachel and I made the life-changing decision to embark on a year-long journey across the United States, we had no idea how transformative it would be. In September 2019, we set off on a journey we called “Portland to Portland.” Our goal was to discover not only new places but also where we truly felt at home.

Our adventure started in Portland, Oregon, surrounded by its lush landscape and vibrant culture. When we started, we aimed to immerse ourselves in different cities, spending a month in each. During this time, we soaked in the local vibes, made new friends, and explored breathtaking outdoor locations. This year was more than just travel; it became a journey of self-discovery and understanding what “home” truly means.

The Travelers: Adventurous Spirits Unite

From the day we met, we shared a burning desire for adventure and an unquenchable curiosity about the world. Digital nomadism became our ideal lifestyle as traditional living felt limiting. We wanted to embrace life on the road, full of spontaneity and freedom.

Every month brought new thrills and unforgettable memories. In Boise, Idaho, we conquered thrilling mountain biking trails, where our adrenaline peaked and our spirits soared. In Austin, Texas, we relished local tacos and live music, bonding over shared experiences with fellow travelers and locals. The pandemic in 2020 turned everything upside down, yet it reinforced our belief that home is not defined by a single location but by the moments and connections we create wherever we go.

Discovering Local Culture and Food

Food became a doorway to local culture. Each city we visited offered its own culinary specialties and quirky stories or legends that captured our imaginations. For example, in Arkansas, we indulged in possum pie—an overly sweet dessert made of chocolate and cream cheese (despite its name, no possum is involved)—while searching for diamonds in a state park. In Denver, we savored craft beers paired with one of the best wood-fired pizzas in the country.

Cultural events further enriched our experiences. From the lively adult soapbox derby in Portland, Oregon, to fascinating traditions like the Burning of Zozobra in Santa Fe, New Mexico, we immersed ourselves in the spirit of each community. Sharing meals and experiences with locals allowed us to forge genuine connections and develop a true sense of belonging, making every stop feel like home.

Nature's Playground

We are both passionate about the outdoors, and exploring nature was a core part of our travels. We hiked scenic trails, stood in awe of dramatic waterfalls, and cycled through beautiful landscapes. Embracing our adventurous spirit led us to conquer mountains we once thought too challenging. We learned just how capable we were through pushing our physical limits.

One of our standout memories is camping under the stars in New Mexico, accompanied only by the occasional curious cow, during our move to Durango from Austin in the early weeks of the pandemic. Surrounded by rolling hills covered in desert scrub and the stillness of the arid landscape, we felt a profound sense of peace and connection to the earth. The dark skies were breathtaking, revealing a dazzling view of the Milky Way that stretched across the horizon, reminding us of the vastness of the universe. Each new location became a unique playground, and we cherished every hike, bike ride, stargazing moment, and campfire chat.

Reflections on Our Journey

After we wrapped up our year-long journey across the country at the end September 2020, we returned to Portland, Oregon, with more than just souvenirs. We came back with a profound understanding of our relationship and ourselves. Overcoming challenges and sharing incredible experiences strengthened our bond.

The pandemic reshaped our travel plans and lifestyles, pushing us to adapt. We often explored lesser-known spots near "home" and even took safe trips abroad. We recognized that adventure could bloom anywhere, from local parks to far-off destinations.

Continuous Road Ahead

Today, we continue to embrace our lives as digital nomad travelers. While we have found a comfortable rhythm, we still explore the country and, on occasion, Europe and beyond. Each trip serves as a reminder that life is an ever-evolving adventure full of surprises, challenges, and growth.

Our list of places to explore keeps evolving. Each destination is more than just a marker on a map—it stands for new experiences, friendships, and personal growth. Whether spending a few months in a quaint European town or enjoying a spontaneous road trip to a local hidden gem, our appetite for adventure remains strong.

Embracing the Journey: Home is a Feeling

Reflecting on our journey from Portland to Portland, we’ve learned that home isn’t just a place; it’s the memories we create, the bonds we forge, and the love we nurture along our travels. Every adventure reminds us that wherever we are, as long as we are together, we have found our home.

To all fellow travelers, keep exploring and appreciating the magic in your journeys. Adventure is just around the corner, waiting for you to embrace it!

We’d love to hear about your travel adventures—where have you discovered home, and what’s next on your bucket list?
